Ryan Garcia predicts prime welterweight battle between Tommy Hearns and Floyd Mayweather

Ryan Garcia has revealed who he thinks would have come out on top in a fantasy welterweight match-up between Tommy Hearns and Floyd Mayweather.

Hearns and Mayweather are both regarded as two of the best fighters of the past 40 years, and each know what it is like to win world titles in multiple divisions.

Hearns became the first boxer in history to become a five-weight world champion, first reigning at welterweight before holding world honours as high as light heavyweight later in his career.

He became a member of the ‘Four Kings’ in the 1980s alongside fellow greats Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran, as the quartet competed against one another in some of the most memorable bouts of recent history.

Mayweather’s world title wins range from super featherweight to light middleweight, as he retired with a perfect 50-0 record after iconic wins against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez.

It is his time at 147lbs where Mayweather established himself as the biggest box office draw in the entire sport, and that is the most likely destination for where a fantasy clash with Hearns would take place.

Garcia himself is now a world champion at welterweight after claiming the WBC title earlier this year, and when discussing the possible Hearns vs. Mayweather fight with Daily Mail Boxing, he went with ‘The Hitman.’

“That’s a good one. I’m going to go Tommy Hearns.”

While Hearns was involved in a number of epic battles throughout his legendary career, he once admitted there was one fight he wishes he could have had before retirement.
