The Kentucky senator was initially hospitalized on June 14
Nearly two months after Mitch McConnell was admitted into a hospital in Washington, the Kentucky senator announced on Thursday that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility.
“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff,” McConnell said in a statement, per CNN. McConnell added that on advice from his doctors, he would be maintaining an “intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”
McConnell was initially hospitalized on June 14 and at the time, the reason was unclear and sparked intense speculation that the former Senate majority leader’s condition may be far more severe than his political team indicated.
Following weeks of rumors, McConnell issued a statement and said that he landed in the hospital after suffering a fall. “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion,” he said. “I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”
McConnell’s health has appeared to be declining for years. He has been hospitalized for both illnesses and physical accidents, and in 2023 had a series of incidents in which he appeared to freeze up in public, briefly losing the ability to speak. In his most recent public appearances, he used a wheelchair to move around the Capitol.
