Manchester City sit top of the Premier League table after two games, thanks to a 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday night.
Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki each scored twice as the Citizens cruised to an important win in south London, moving Enzo Maresca’s side top of the table.
Next up for City is a home game against newly-promoted Coventry City but, in the meantime, it has emerged that the Manchester giants are in talks over a sensational move to sign a key player from a fierce rival.
As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are in talks to sign attacker Cody Gakpo from Liverpool in the closing stages of the transfer window.
Romano claims that City are stepping up their pursuit of the Dutchman and are advancing in talks with the player’s representatives.
Gakpo, 27, is said to have emerged as City’s top target as they look to bolster Maresca’s attacking options before the end of the transfer window.

Having joined Liverpool from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven back in 2023, Gakpo has since scored 51 goals and provided 24 assists in 182 games fore the Reds across all competitions.
The Netherlands international has started both of Liverpool’s games so far this term, and provided an assist for Alexander Isak as the Reds came from behind twice to draw 2-2 against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The Dutchman’s current contract at Anfield isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2030, but Romano suggests that Liverpool could be willing to sell the player if they can find a replacement.
Gakpo’s versatility could appeal to City boss Maresca, with the Dutchman capable of operating across the frontline.
