CALIFORNIA · WILDFIRES
Fast-moving brush fires in Southern California prompted evacuation orders as hot, dry Santa Ana winds increased fire danger. The Norte Fire near San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano damaged or destroyed homes, while other fires and wind warnings affected the wider Los Angeles region.
Norte Fire forces evacuations
The Norte Fire was reported late Friday morning, October 16, near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente and spread toward nearby San Juan Capistrano. Authorities issued evacuation orders for affected areas as firefighters worked from the ground and air. ABC7 reported that six homes had been damaged or destroyed and that one firefighter had been injured, citing the Orange County Fire Authority.
Fire conditions were made more dangerous by strong, dry winds and unusually high temperatures. Officials urged residents to avoid the affected areas, follow evacuation instructions and monitor local emergency alerts. Some schools in the Capistrano Unified School District dismissed students early and cancelled after-school activities because of the fire.
Other fires and hazardous weather
The Norte Fire was part of a broader period of elevated fire danger across Southern California. News reports also described the Bryson Fire in Malibu and the Peak Fire near Azusa. Red Flag Warnings and high-wind advisories covered parts of the region, with officials warning that gusty conditions could help flames spread and make firefighting more difficult.
Power companies also carried out precautionary shutoffs in some areas to reduce the risk of electrical equipment starting additional fires. The scale and location of outages varied by service area. Residents were advised to check their utility’s current outage map rather than rely on older estimates.
What residents should do
People in or near an evacuation area should follow instructions from local fire and law-enforcement agencies immediately. Keep essential medication, identification, chargers and supplies ready, plan more than one exit route where possible, and do not drive into closed roads or smoke-affected areas. Conditions can change quickly when strong winds are present.
Fire perimeters, evacuation zones, containment figures and road closures are time-sensitive. This report reflects information published on October 16–17, 2026; readers should check current local alerts for the latest official instructions.
