Science reporting translates research and discovery into clear information without overstating what a study proves. A finding can be promising and important while still needing replication, larger samples or years of further work before it changes everyday practice.

Read beyond the headline

Look for the research question, the methods used, the number and type of participants or observations, and the limitations acknowledged by the researchers. A laboratory result, animal study, computer model and large human trial provide different kinds of evidence. They should not be presented as interchangeable.

Check the source and review process

Useful sources include the original paper, a university or research institute statement, a journal editorial and comments from independent specialists. Peer review is an important quality check, but it does not guarantee that every result is correct. Preprints have not completed the same journal review process and should be labelled accordingly.

What does it mean?

Good coverage distinguishes correlation from causation, relative risk from absolute risk, and an early result from an established scientific consensus. It should explain uncertainty in plain language and state when evidence does not support a firm conclusion.

VALUTED NEWS science coverage focuses on what researchers found, how they reached the result and what remains unknown. This evergreen explainer does not announce a new discovery; readers should consult dated research and expert commentary for specific claims.
