It is the primary HBM supplier to Nvidia and was recently selected by Microsoft for its own proprietary AI chips. It was founded in 1983 as Hyundai Electronics but merged with LG Semicon in 1999 and was rebranded Hynix Semiconductor in 2001. A decade later it agreed a sale to SK Telecom for $3bn and was renamed SK Hynix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is it performing?<\/strong> Rising prices for SK Hynix\u2019s memory chips helped its first-quarter revenue nearly triple year on year to Won52.6tn ($34.5bn). Its shares are up more than 600 per cent over the past year on the Kospi in Seoul, its main listing. Last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3f052dba-78a4-43bb-af45-9af2f3441fd5?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">it overtook Samsung<\/a> to become South Korea\u2019s largest company as it joined the trillion-dollar club of companies with a market value of more than $1tn. <\/p>\n<p>Its Seoul-listed shares closed slightly lower today and have now dropped by a quarter from their record high two weeks ago. SK Hynix\u2019s American depositary receipts will begin trading at $149 each later following high demand for the IPO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Share sale adds to Wall Street\u2019s bumper summer.<\/strong> The SK Hynix IPO adds to a record summer for Wall Street share sales. Last month SpaceX pulled off the biggest IPO in history, raising $75bn. Alphabet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/85299cdd-d9b3-4b40-8d10-73fc9ddb4573?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">raised $85bn from a share sale in early June<\/a> to fund AI infrastructure development and the FT has reported Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e6df645d-1709-4a77-b15d-aa43a0209efd?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">is considering a similar move<\/a> as part of plans to spend up to $145bn for AI-related projects this year. Anthropic and OpenAI also plan massive Wall Street debuts.<\/p>\n<p>But investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b90bdfcb-d773-42f7-bb5f-52dbd28b2174?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">are increasingly questioning<\/a> the vast AI spending plans of the so-called hyperscalers, in particular Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet, and whether it will translate into sufficient profits to justify their huge share price gains of recent years.<\/p>\n<p>But for now the suppliers of the AI boom\u2019s picks and shovels, like SK Hynix, continue to see record demand for their products.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what else I\u2019m keeping tabs on today and over the weekend:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"o3-editorial-typography-list-unordered\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Economic data:<\/strong> Brazil\u2018s statistics agency, IBGE, is scheduled to release its\u00a0IPCA inflation\u00a0index for June. Mexican industrial output\u00a0for May is also due. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Companies:<\/strong> Delta Air Lines publishes second-quarter results and investors will be watching out for the impact of high fuel costs linked to the Iran war.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Sport:<\/strong> It\u2019s men\u2019s semi-final day at Wimbledon and tomorrow sees an all-Czech match-up in the women\u2019s final before the men compete for the title on Sunday. At the World Cup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/891dd84d-b02e-4718-826f-77a38c223753?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">Spain and Belgium<\/a> play in the second of the quarter-finals later today, with the remaining matches at this stage happening over the weekend.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"sjgrytni\" class=\"n-content-heading-3 o3-editorial-typography-subheading\">Five more top stories<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Exclusive: OpenAI and Google are selling their advanced AI models to Chinese tech giants<\/strong> blacklisted by the Pentagon, exposing a gap in Washington\u2019s efforts to slow Beijing\u2019s AI development. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5d6aafa1-5d47-4585-aa95-6ec06a6cd20f?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">the sales are legal<\/a>, they have reignited calls for tighter US regulation of AI models similar to its restrictions on exports of the chips used to train powerful models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>US private equity group<\/strong> <strong>Apollo has agreed to buy easyJet, one of Europe\u2019s largest low-cost airlines, in a \u00a35.7bn ($7.64bn) deal. <\/strong>Apollo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7a6d7e59-a040-41cf-a8b5-2aafcaa1731b?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">gatecrashed a previously agreed \u00a35.5bn deal<\/a> between easyJet and the US private credit group Castlelake. Apollo has previously invested in Aeromexico, the low-cost carrier Sun Country Airlines and cargo group Atlas Air. It has also provided financing to Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Kevin Warsh has unveiled big names<\/strong> <strong>from business and academia<\/strong> to lead his efforts to modernise the Federal Reserve. Those picked by the Fed chair to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e45a34e0-cd96-4b72-9ff3-380efc28a705?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">head five new task forces<\/a> include former Bank of England governor Mervyn King and\u00a0tech boss Marc Andreessen to \u201csharpen\u201d the world\u2019s most important financial institution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>Goldman Sachs has warned employees to limit their betting on prediction markets<\/strong> <strong>to sports and entertainment categories,<\/strong> as it confronts compliance risks posed by wagers on everything from elections to interest rates. The Wall Street bank warned employees that multiple breaches of the policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7a2a3200-763f-4141-8372-f2f6afba521d?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">could cost an employee their job<\/a>, according to a person familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"o3-editorial-typography-list-unordered\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>More banking news:<\/strong> HSBC has begun to market risky loans made by Hang Seng Bank to investors, in an early sign of how Europe\u2019s largest lender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1faf3134-933f-4526-a790-b15dbc3210eb\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">intends to overhaul<\/a> the Hong Kong bank it took private this year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> <strong>At least 12 people have died and 19 are missing in a wildfire in southern Spain<\/strong> as a heatwave across Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/065e5550-1691-4698-8d62-b4735dfec6ca?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\" data-trackable=\"link\">sparks alarm about a summer of dangerous blazes<\/a>.
