From September this year, the NHS will extend RSV vaccination to all adults aged 65-74 who are living with a chronic respiratory condition or who have a suppressed immune system.<\/p>\n

Health experts have described the move as a \u201cwin-win\u201d that will result in fewer people getting ill, and fewer people attending emergency departments (EDs), thus easing the pressure on the NHS.\u00a0<\/p>\n

NHS England explained that \u201cthousands of vulnerable adults\u201d would become eligible for the vaccine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

People would be able to receive their jab from their local GP practice or, in some parts of the country, at their local high street pharmacy.<\/p>\n

How the RSV Vaccine Rollout Has Expanded\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Since September 2024, RSV vaccination has been routinely available to older adults as they turned 75 years of age, with an initial catch-up also offered to adults who were aged 75 to 79 years on 1 September 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All residents in care homes for older adults are already able to get the RSV vaccine, as are pregnant women, who can be vaccinated from 28 weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n

In April this year, the programme was expanded to also include all adults aged 80 years and over.<\/p>\n

The latest expansion comes after the government accepted advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to expand eligibility for the RSV vaccination programme in England. The newly eligible groups were identified by JCVI as having a higher risk of severe outcomes from RSV infection, including hospitalisation, particularly during winter when cases peaked.<\/p>\n

A 2021 study<\/a> estimated that RSV accounted for a seasonal annual average of 71 respiratory admissions per 100,000 adults age 65-74.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach year, RSV is responsible for thousands of older people falling ill \u2014 many of them will need to attend an ED,\u201d said Dr Adrian Boyle, Royal College of Emergency Medicine immediate past president, in a press release.<\/p>\n

Health Leaders Welcome the Expansion\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Expanding the vaccine to adults aged 65-74 with a chronic respiratory condition or a suppressed immune system could \u201chelp keep people out of hospital\u201d, Caroline Temmink, director of vaccination at NHS England, pointed out in a press release.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew evidence makes it clear that these two groups of patients are at the highest risk of needing hospital admission due to RSV\u201d, said Dr Conall Watson, consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency.<\/p>\n

Welcoming the expansion, Professor Victoria Tzortziou Brown, Royal College of GPs president, said vaccination was \u201cone of the most effective\u201d ways to protect patients and reduce avoidable hospital admissions.<\/p>\n
