Nepal\u2019s Rasuwa District is marked in red.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Nepali officials, the flood began at 8:40 a.m. on August 26, just three minutes after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit in Tibet, on China\u2019s side of the border. That apparently caused a landslide involving both rock and ice from a Himalayan glacier. When the material flowed into the Lhende River in Tibet, known in Nepal as the Bhotekoshi, it caused the river to catastrophically overflow its banks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/national\/2026\/08\/26\/nepal-seeks-answers-on-flash-flood-as-india-china-us-and-world-bank-offer-support\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathmandu Post summarized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Nepali-language explanation offered by Nepal\u2019s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said a preliminary study, based on an analysis of Planet Labs satellite imagery, indicates that a debris-laden flood entered the Lhende river after a glacial-rock slide occurred along the Nepal-China border, about 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border point. The flood then flowed through Timure and entered the Trishuli river.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What exactly transformed a relatively minor earthquake into a crushing flood remains unclear. The Kathmandu Post reported that both Nepal and China were struggling to get accurate information in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Citing Nepal\u2019s consul general in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, the Post said that \u201cneither Nepali nor Chinese authorities had been able to establish contact with security personnel deployed along parts of the Nepal-China border. As a result, there was no authoritative information on what had triggered the massive outburst.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speculation centers on a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), and for good reason: this particular kind of natural disaster has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/ht-explainers\/nepal-flash-floods-possible-causes-glacial-lake-outburst-glof-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become more and more common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Himalayan region in recent years. As glacial melt accelerates on our warming planet, the meltwater can become trapped behind debris, creating a new glacial lake. But if that natural dam breaks \u2013 perhaps under strain from a landslide, or shaken loose by an earthquake, or both \u2013 it releases a massive flood, along with all the debris that had been trapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A GLOF in India\u2019s Sikkim in 2023 killed more than 100 people. The 2021 Uttarakhand flood, also in the Indian Himalayas, killed more than 200. Floods and landslides have become an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2025\/06\/floods-and-landslides-devastate-indias-northeast-again\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual occurrence in India\u2019s Northeast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which borders both Nepal and China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the latest statement from Nepal\u2019s Office of the Prime Minister, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/national\/2026\/08\/26\/update-rasuwa-flood-death-toll-climbs-to-72-as-dozens-remain-missing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95 bodies have been recovered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many of which have yet to be identified. Hundreds of people are still missing, including 85 security personnel, 60 people \u201cassociated with various hydropower projects,\u201d and 484 tourists (391 foreigners and 93 Nepalis). The tourists include 100 visitors from India, many of whom are in Nepal on a religious pilgrimage, 47 from the United States, and 33 from the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Update: Nepal\u2019s government has now confirmed 158 deaths, with over 400 people still missing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nepal\u2019s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1377518477828796&amp;set=a.189889296591726\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nearly 200 people had been rescued from the affected area, with search and rescue operations ongoing. Videos <a href=\"https:\/\/publish.x.com\/?query=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FNepalPoliceHQ%2Fstatus%2F2092599352284098938&amp;widget=Tweet\">posted online by the Nepal Police<\/a> show a massive wall of water destroying a bridge and a town partially buried under mud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of this writing, China\u2019s state-run broadcaster, CCTV, had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/c6y8mjmnpxv0t\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed only three deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but 265 people remain missing. Between China and Nepal, then, nearly 900 people are still unaccounted for, suggesting the death toll could rise sharply as recovery operations continue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping, who is also China\u2019s president, instructed local authorities \u201cto make every effort to search for and rescue missing persons, relocate and resettle threatened people, and promptly treat the injured to minimize casualties,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cctv.com\/2026\/08\/26\/ARTIQIFhIlxFSBkI7mkAB4wM260826.shtml?spm=C96370.PPDB2vhvSivD.EVRLyOeY7a6a.1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to CCTV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also called for strengthening \u201cmonitoring and early warning systems.\u201d While Xi didn\u2019t mention it specifically, Nepali researchers have said a lack of timely information sharing about conditions on either side of the border may have contributed to the devastating impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1D6nWrSApu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post on Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nepal\u2019s Prime Minister Balendra Shah said that the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police had been dispatched to the scene of the disaster \u201cfor rescue and relief operations.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1EUZkvoNSN\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follow-up post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Shah extended his \u201cheartfelt\u201d and \u201cdeepest condolences to those brothers and sisters who have mourned the loss of their people, their family, and everything.\u201d He also had a message for the flood victims:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pain you have suffered and the loss you have suffered is not small. But I want to assure you \u2013 you are not alone in these difficult times. The kingdom is with you all with its resources. Please be patient. The government will take full responsibility for your rescue, treatment, food, and shelter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flood will pose a test for Shah and his relatively new government. Shah took office as prime minister on March 27, 2026; he hadn\u2019t quite reached the five-month mark before the disaster hit. A relative political neophyte, Shah was elected on a wave of anti-establishment sentiment after Gen Z protesters forced the previous government from office.
