Egypt\u2019s nuclear regulator has issued a<\/span> statement<\/span><\/a> on Tuesday, 18 August, explaining the safety standards of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, following recently<\/span> published allegations by Politico<\/span><\/a> about potential violations during the project\u2019s construction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRA) <\/span>said<\/span><\/a> the plant is being implemented in line with internationally recognised nuclear safety and security standards and remains under continuous national regulatory oversight.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the authority, all stages of construction are also subject to monitoring and support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/span><\/p>\n

ENRA said its oversight of the project includes reviewing licensing documents, approving construction activities, conducting daily and periodic inspections, and following up on any observations identified during inspections.<\/span><\/p>\n

The authority added that the licensing process took around 18 months and involved international experts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Daily inspections are carried out through a resident inspector system involving ENRA specialists, alongside experts from an international consultant with experience in the technology used at the plant, according to the statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

ENRA said that any observations identified during inspections are followed up with Egypt\u2019s Nuclear Power Plants Authority and the Russian contractor to ensure that corrective measures are taken and approved requirements are met.<\/span><\/p>\n

The statement also pointed to an IAEA review mission in June 2026, which, according to ENRA, found that Egypt has a comprehensive regulatory and oversight framework for nuclear activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

ENRA said there are currently no threats to the safety of the El Dabaa plant, attributing this to quality control systems at the construction site and compliance with regulatory procedures and required approvals.<\/span><\/p>\n

The authority added that all activities at the site remain subject to strict national oversight and are being carried out in accordance with IAEA standards and international best practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

The El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, located on Egypt\u2019s Mediterranean coast, is being built in cooperation with Russia\u2019s state nuclear corporation Rosatom and is set to become Egypt\u2019s first nuclear power plant.<\/span><\/p>\n
