{"id":2805,"date":"2026-08-18T09:45:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T09:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valutednews.com\/?p=2805"},"modified":"2026-08-18T09:45:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T09:45:43","slug":"treasury-yields-rise-as-oil-gains-and-u-s-iran-tensions-fuel-inflation-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valutednews.com\/?p=2805","title":{"rendered":"Treasury yields rise as oil gains and U.S.-Iran tensions fuel inflation fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108345370\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., Aug. 5, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Jeenah Moon | Reuters<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Treasury yields rose on Tuesday, with long-dated yields surging to their highest level in over two decades, as tensions between the U.S. and Iran persisted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The early hours of Tuesday morning saw yields on U.S. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@US.1\/\">30-year Treasury<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> yields add over 1 basis point to trade at around 5.322%, hovering just below the highest level since 2002.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US10Y\/\">10-year Treasury<\/a> note yield \u2014 the main benchmark for mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt \u2014 was more than 1 basis point higher at 4.736%.<\/p>\n<p>The yield on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US2Y\/\">2-year Treasury<\/a> note, which typically reacts in line with short-term Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, was flat at 4.186%.<\/p>\n<p>One basis point equals 0.01%, and yields and prices move inversely to one another.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/17\/oil-prices-iran-war-strait-hormuz.html\">Oil prices rose<\/a> as the 60-day deadline for the U.S. and Iran to secure a peace deal expired Monday, with Iran ruling out the possibility of an extension, according to state media. A senior Iranian official also told Reuters that Tehran would take an offensive stance if diplomacy with the U.S. fails.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Markets have seen growing weakness over the last 24 hours, with bonds and equities slipping thanks to negative geopolitical headlines from the Middle East,&#8221; Deutsche Bank&#8217;s Jim Rid wrote in a note on Tuesday. &#8220;There wasn&#8217;t a single catalyst for the declines, but with few signs of the US and Iran coming to any sort of a deal, that meant investors priced in a more extended closure of the Strait of Hormuz.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Resurging fears around inflation are sending government borrowing costs higher across the globe, with many longer-maturity bond yields hovering near multi-decade highs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The yield on Japan&#8217;s long-dated government bonds hovered near levels reached in May, when yields <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/01\/japan-pm-takaichis-budget-remarks-send-red-flag-to-bond-markets.html\">hit<\/a> 40-year highs. Germany&#8217;s 30-year bond yield was last seen at its highest since 2011, while their British counterparts approached a multi-decade high.
