to end birthright citizenship, delivering the biggest legal setback to his presidency since it ruled against his tariff regime earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>But in a major win for the Trump administration, the court allowed states to bar transgender athletes from women\u2019s and girls\u2019 sports, finding that given the inherent physical differences between the sexes, \u201cseparate and come one day after <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/north-america\/trump-s-big-day-at-the-supreme-court-an-historic-win-a-tremendous-loss-and-more-to-come-20260630-p60b4m.html\">a flurry of verdicts on Trump administration matters<\/a> that will impact presidential power long beyond Trump\u2019s term.<\/p>\n<p>In a split decision, the majority of the bench affirmed birthright citizenship, determining: \u201cCitizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights \u2013 to freely participate in our political community. Chief Justice John Roberts \u2013 a conservative judge nominated by Republican president George W. Clarence Thomas, the second longest-serving Supreme Court justice in US history, said the 14th Amendment was enacted after the Civil War to secure the rights of former slaves, not \u201cforeign birth tourists and illegal aliens\u201d. He said in his dissent: \u201cI am not sure that today\u2019s opinion will stand the test of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-c502198b-0 NkURW\">\n<p>Trump had already foreshadowed that he expected the court to rule against him.
