President Donald Trump said Monday that \u201cjihadists\u201d are being elected \u201call over the place\u201d \u2014 trying a new, incendiary line of attack against Democrats with the midterm election just three months away.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, the one thing is, we have jihadists being elected all over the place,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, without specifying who he was talking about or offering evidence of his claims.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have this whether it\u2019s communism, jihadism,\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n
The president has frequently cast Democrats and democratic socialists as communists<\/a>, looking to portray the party as increasingly extreme headed into November \u2014 even though portrayals of even the party\u2019s most liberal candidates as communists are far from reality.<\/p>\n But calling them \u201cjihadists\u201d is a new escalation, which Trump acknowledged in his remarks Monday, recounting that a \u201cfriend of mine called up,\u201d and told him, \u201c\u2019You know, really, you should use the word jihadist because that\u2019s what\u2019s happening.\u2019\u201d The president\u2019s escalating rhetoric comes amid broad lines of attack from others in the GOP seeking to paint Muslim candidates as anti-American.<\/p>\n Trump said that, \u201cas an example,\u201d some of the candidates he termed \u201cjihadist\u201d are coming from countries like Somalia. The president has repeatedly criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat who was born in Somalia, came to the United States as a child and is now a naturalized citizen. Trump has previously advocated for sending Omar and another Muslim congresswoman \u201cback from where they came<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n He\u2019s also unleashed increasingly provocative rhetoric against Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, saying at a campaign event in Las Vegas last week that he\u2019s \u201cfull of sh*t\u201d and is a \u201chater of Jews and hater of Israel,\u201d without offering evidence. El-Sayed, who is Muslim, has been critical of the Israeli government.<\/p>\n On Monday, Trump posted<\/a> on Truth Social an image of El-Sayed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren in a Native American headdress, with the caption, \u201cPocahontas and \u2018Abdul\u2019 want to take your stuff, and Crash the Economy!!!\u201d And over the weekend, Trump shared an image of himself and first lady Melania Trump alongside a photo of El-Sayed and his wife, Sarah Jukaku, who wears a hijab. The caption read: \u201cTwo very different America\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n In an interview on CNN\u2019s Sate of the Union with Jake Tapper, El-Sayed agreed that the two images offered differing visions of America.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, he\u2019s right. One in which your overlords are two people who don\u2019t like each other but joint in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you. Or, two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together, want to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family and know that that family is going to have the good thing,\u201d El-Sayed said. \u201cSo, yes, you got two different visions of America.\u201d<\/p>\n And it\u2019s not just Trump engaging in that sort of rhetoric. Shortly after El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination last week, national Republicans repeatedly started referring to him by his full name<\/a>: Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed.<\/p>\n Previously, Trump has accused Democrats of being taken over by \u201cgodless Communists\u201d who pose an existential threat to the country.
