\n\tJust a few weeks after it was reported that Donald Trump<\/a> was unsatisfied<\/a> with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a>\u2018s progress codifying his vaccine conspiracies into national health policy, the president signed an executive order<\/a> radically remaking the nation\u2019s childhood immunization schedule.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump told reporters he was \u201cproud to officially announce the United States of America\u2019s gold standard childhood vaccination recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat has to do with many subjects including autism<\/a> in particular,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast month, The Wall Street Journal <\/em>reported that Trump has complained to Kennedy and others that the health secretary had not acted aggressively enough to establish a link between childhood vaccinations and autism. Researchers, medical experts, and the greater scientific community have concluded that vaccines<\/a> do not cause autism, and no reputable evidence to the contrary exists.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt seems that Trump may have lit a fire under Kennedy\u2019s ass, though \u2014 or that Kennedy\u2019s inaction prompted Trump to take matters into his own hands.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe order would eliminate several vaccines from the recommendations for children, not because there\u2019s any evidence they are harmful but because \u2014 according to the White House \u2014 not enough \u201cpeer\u201d countries with health systems comparable to the United States recommend them. The so-called \u201cGold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations\u201d order downgrades vaccines for diseases like RSV, hepatitis, and meningococcus to only be recommended for \u201ccertain high-risk groups or populations.\u201d Immunizations against the flu and Covid-19 are no longer recommended, but listed under a category of immunization subject to \u201cshared clinical decision-making.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump is also demanding that the manner in which the combined measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine \u2014 one of the most effective and safe vaccinations against three potentially deadly childhood diseases \u2014 be completely overhauled. The order calls for the MMR vaccine to \u201cbe administered in three separate single-disease shots once such products are domestically available and that, to the maximum extent feasible, all childhood immunizations should be administered at separate medical visits.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn classic Trump fashion, his delivery of this policy came with a wild anecdote in which he said that children\u2019s vaccines often \u201clook like the size of a bottle of soda.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSeparate visits for every shot means more time off work for parents, child care arrangements, copays and bills, but these are the kind of knock-on effects for American families that Trump\u2019s policies so often ignore. But outside of the logistical and economic impact, there are some signs that Trump\u2019s political capital may be at stake in this decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShortly after the order, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, a licensed medical doctor, posted<\/a> that the president\u2019s executive order was \u201cso wrong,\u201d adding that \u201cThe President does not have the expertise to make these changes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cVaccines are overwhelmingly safe,\u201d Cassidy continued. \u201cVaccines are effective. Vaccines DO NOT cause autism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt should be noted that Cassidy voted to confirm Kennedy as HHS secretary last year, despite Kennedy\u2019s history of pushing vaccine conspiracy theories. Kennedy, who was in the room with Trump when he signed the order, later praised<\/a> Trump for standing for \u201cgold-standard science.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dubious and scientifically unfounded link between autism and vaccines is a relatively new priority of Trump\u2019s, and one that he appears to have adopted largely because of the influence of RFK Jr.\u2019s Make America Health Again movement.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs is often the case, when fringe groups like MAHA get what they want, society as a whole suffers. It\u2019s a hard shot to take.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
