Maybe some wheedling, maybe even some good old-fashioned palling around. The only times it\u2019s really, truly effective, however, are when the refs are already on your side, for reasons fair or foul.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\" id=\"auto-tag_donald-trump\" data-tag=\"donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> loves \u2014 <em>loves<\/em> \u2014 to work the refs. And in most cases, he hired them. On Friday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/117055247374455490\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">dumped a long diatribe on Truth Social<\/a> making a direct appeal to the Supreme Court over the status of his costly, ugly, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-demands-support-ballroom-corresondents-dinner-attack-1235554167\/\">wholly unnecessary<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ballroom\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ballroom\" data-tag=\"ballroom\">ballroom<\/a> project, which was halted by a federal appeals court ruling earlier that day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in D.C. upheld a preliminary injunction that had also gummed up construction. The original case, filed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-appeals-court-blocks-trumps-400-million-white-house-ballroom-project-2026-08-07\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">alleged<\/a> that Trump did not seek proper authorization from Congress before starting on the 90,000-square-foot, $400 million dollar renovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cEach \u200cPresident is a temporary tenant, not the owner, of the White House,\u201d the court\u2019s ruling on Friday said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe ruling is on hold for 14 days to allow Trump to appeal to the Supreme Court, which he was always going to do. But even that modicum of dissent was always bound to set Trump off, and sure enough, off he went. Trump claims it\u2019s a gift from him to the American people, but federal funding \u2014 that comes from tax dollars \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-ballroom-funded-taxpayers-records-reveal-1235578674\/\">was always going to be involved<\/a>. But the reason this is such an issue is that Trump sees the world in terms of columns built and bricks laid: He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/white-house-bulldozed-trump-branded-estate-1235452572\/\">wants a lasting, physical legacy<\/a> at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOr to put it more simply: He\u2019s a diva who is obsessed with design. And despite the fact that Trump has several hand-picked justices on the bench, they haven\u2019t always been willing to throw calls his way for some of this middling bureaucratic fare. Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh helped Trump overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, but they\u2019ve also broken from his desires on several occasions.
