Which is worth more: a company that\u2019s sitting out Big Tech\u2019s mega AI spending spree<\/a> or a company that\u2019s fueling it?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the question Wall Street has been grappling with as Apple and Nvidia traded off for the title of world\u2019s most valuable company. Apple snagged the title earlier this week, but Nvidia took it back just days later following the iPhone maker\u2019s Thursday earnings report.<\/p>\n

The back-and-forth is telling. Apple makes the phones and computers that billions of people use to access AI chatbots and agents. But it\u2019s been accused of falling behind in AI<\/a>, and its core business might have fewer growth opportunities than a rapidly advancing new technology. Plus it\u2019s grappling with a component shortage that\u2019s roiled the tech industry.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Nvidia makes the chips and developer tools that power AI. It\u2019s essential to the technology\u2019s future \u2013 and more vulnerable to the uncertainty that comes with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we\u2019re in the part where we\u2019re creating (AI)\u2026 that\u2019s where you\u2019re going to be watching Nvidia,\u201d said Joe Tigay, portfolio manager for the Rational Equity Armor Fund, a fund that prioritizes total return on investment. In the future, \u201cwe\u2019re going to be looking for companies that are going to monetize the consumption of AI. And Apple absolutely wants to be that company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike many of its Big Tech peers, Apple isn\u2019t pouring billions into building new data centers. Instead, its revenue is largely driven by iPhone<\/a> sales \u2013 exactly the type of consistent and predictable business that appeals to investors.<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s iPhone revenue grew 22% in the company\u2019s most recent quarter compared to the same period last year; overall revenue rose 16% year-over-year and beat Wall Street\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n

But analysts are wondering whether the company plans to revamp its hit products in the age of AI and develop new ones. Apple has faced setbacks with AI innovations such as its Siri AI assistant<\/a>, which is set to launch this fall.<\/p>\n

The iPhone\u2019s success, however, has satisfied some of those concerns for now, especially since Apple can partner with other companies like Google<\/a> to use their AI models.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason why Apple has done so well is people finally recognize that they don\u2019t need to spend hundreds of billions to be relevant in this market,\u201d said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Anurag Rana,<\/strong> \u201cbecause they will use whichever best (AI) model that\u2019s out there, and that model company would be privileged to be on the iPhone.\u201d<\/p>\n

But AI is impacting the company in another way: a memory shortage<\/a> spurred by the AI data center buildout.<\/p>\n

Apple has already raised the prices<\/a> of Mac computers, iPads and other products, and some analysts believe iPhones could be next. It recently launched a customer leasing program<\/a> for iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and Macs instead of buying them, which could make the devices feel more affordable.<\/p>\n

Apple said it\u2019s expecting even higher memory costs for the September quarter. Shares dropped by more than 6% after the market closed on Thursday following Apple\u2019s earnings report.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe reluctantly raised prices, I would say,\u201d CEO Tim Cook said during his last earnings call as the company\u2019s chief executive. \u201cWe did it because we\u2019re in what I would characterize as a 100-year-flood on memory pricing, with exponential increases in memory prices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nvidia\u2019s chips are essential to AI data centers, pushing its business to stratospheric heights.<\/p>\n

The company reported record revenue in its most recent earnings report in May, up 20% from the previous quarter and 85% from the same period a year ago. And it holds 81% of the market share revenue for data center chips, the International Data Corporation told CNN earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But that success means investors and analysts now expect nothing short of explosive growth every quarter. And whether it delivers on those expectations in the long term largely depends on whether tech giants continue spending big on data centers.<\/p>\n

There have also been growing concerns that AI companies are propping each other up through a web of funding deals, with Nvidia at the heart of those worries. Nvidia has invested billions in companies like OpenAI<\/a> and Anthropic<\/a>, which have in turn committed to buying Nvidia\u2019s chips.<\/p>\n

Nvidia\u2019s chip sales have made it the biggest beneficiary of the AI boom \u2013 but consumers still need smartphones or laptops to use AI services \u2013 like the ones Apple makes.<\/p>\n

\u201cNvidia is selling horsepower,\u201d said Rational Equity Armor Fund\u2019s Tigay. \u201cApple is selling the steering wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n
