LOS ANGELES \u2013 Director Christopher Nolan\u2019s adaptation of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d had an epic debut, grossing $264.1 million in global ticket sales on its opening weekend, including $124.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, Universal Pictures (CMCSA.O), opens new tab said on Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The film, based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer, stars Matt \u200bDamon as the Greek hero Odysseus, and follows his perilous journey home after fighting the Trojan War. It \u200bis Nolan\u2019s first movie since the 2023 blockbuster \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d which won Academy Awards in several categories, including \u2060directing and best picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just palpable excitement across the domestic market this weekend for \u2018The Odyssey\u2019,\u201d said Jim Orr, Universal\u2019s \u200bpresident of domestic theatrical distribution.<\/p>\n

The film topped the weekend\u2019s domestic and global box office, according to Rentrak. It had broad appeal \u200bwith movie-goers, with half of ticket-buyers between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, Orr told Reuters.<\/p>\n

The strong opening performance of the film is a testament to Nolan\u2019s popularity among moviegoers.<\/p>\n

\u201cModern audiences should not be underestimated on their knowledge of film and filmmakers,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, \u200bRentrak\u2019s head of marketplace trends. \u201cAnd that passion they have for film is manifest in their devotion to Christopher Nolan. It \u200breally is a thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d cost $250 million to make. It received an A CinemaScore from filmgoers who attended opening-night screenings, and an audience \u200crating \u2060of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n

The film ranks among Nolan\u2019s biggest opening weekends.<\/p>\n

Factoring in inflation, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d ranks as his third-highest-opening film globally, behind 2012\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d and 2008\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight,\u201d which brought in inflation-adjusted totals of $358.5 million and $304 million, respectively, in worldwide ticket sales during their opening weekends.<\/p>\n

Half the movie-goers elected to see \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d in an enhanced format in the U.S. and \u200bCanada, including 23% at IMAX, \u200baccording to Universal.<\/p>\n

Fans began snapping \u2060up tickets for \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d a year ago when seats at select IMAX theaters went on sale. IMAX said demand for tickets was so high that more than 50 theaters across North America \u200badded show times between midnight and 7 a.m.<\/p>\n

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said the company had \u200bbooked $50 million in \u2060advance ticket sales, its strongest presales ever. He has extolled the use of IMAX cameras and 70 mm film to capture the sweeping narrative, generating more buzz around the movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just a well-made \u2014 almost perfectly made \u2014 movie in many respects,\u201d said Gelfond.<\/p>\n

Most scholars believe \u2060the epic \u200bpoem attributed to Homer was composed in the seventh or eighth century \u200bBC and was sung and passed on orally before it was written down.
