An investigation by the Tech Transparency Project has raised concerns about whether app-store age ratings and parental controls adequately protect teenagers from AI-powered “nudify” apps.
Researchers using test accounts for hypothetical 13-year-olds reportedly downloaded 135 apps with features designed to manipulate photos into non-consensual nude or sexualised imagery. Some apps were rated as suitable for minors, and certain subscriptions could be started without a parent alert.
The findings point to a gap between platform policies and what young users may still access. Apple said it updated moderation guidance and removed some reported apps; Google said it removes harmful content and enforces its policies. Parental controls can help, but the investigation suggests they are not a complete safeguard.
